Wimbledon Fashion

So you thought all eyes at Wimbledon would be glued to the game? This is most unlikely as many are already commenting on the best dressed, the worst, the most outrageous and the winning look. Making a fashion statement on the court is now just as normal as drinking pimms or eating delicious strawberries and cream.

The Williams sisters never fail to make a fashion statement with Venus today sporting a v-neck white playsuit with cut out sleeves from her own fashion label EleVen. The playsuit is made with a lace fabric, exposes an area of her back, has a gold zip at the front and she accessorised the piece with a thin gold belt. The outfit was strangely baggy from her waist above and high rising on her legs. It may not seem the most practical of outfits to play tennis in but features such as the extra large armholes make it an understandable choice for Venus; its practical in some ways, promotes her own fashion label and allows her to make a statement before the game even begins. However the oversized ring, necklace with a large pendant and giant heavy metal earrings surely must have caused a distraction when playing tennis? The outfit caused a stir of varying opinions; some think the choice of outfit was fun and fresh whereas others prefer a more traditional tennis ensemble. Whether you think Venus made an excellent choice or a terrible mistake, the important thing is she won her sets 6-3, 6-1.

"It's a jumper," Williams said. "Jumpers are very 'now,' as is lace. The shoulders have a lot of draping. It's a kind of trendy dress. It's fun. The back is like a cutout or peekaboo. I'm always trying to do something different and fun."

Its not just Venus making news in the fashion world, it was younger sister Serena making the fashion statement yesterday during warm ups. Serena wore a simple long sleeve white t-shirt with a pair of extremely flamboyant tie-dye pink and white leggings and a black Nike cap. Serena is used to making fashion statements on centre court, she caused a stir when she sported a denim skirt, black crop top and knee high Nike boots at the US opens in 2004. It had very little resemblance to a traditional white ladies tennis outfit.

Although I like the traditional tennis outfit, I believe wearing what you feel comfortable in is of the most importance. Choosing an outfit which you can easily move about in and doesn’t affect your performance in a negative way is necessary. I guess Venus and Serena often choose to wear outfits which they feel confident and powerful in and if you believe you can win you most definitely can.

Gareth Pugh for MAC cosmetics

MAC cosmetics are certainly no strangers to collaborations. Arguably some of the best include Barbie Loves MAC, Hello Kitty for MAC, MAC give me Liberty of London and most recently Wonder Woman. Now the Canadian company are launching a new exciting collection in collaboration with British fashion designer Gareth Pugh later this year in November. This new venture won’t be a huge surprise to many as the two companies have had a public relationship for the past seven years, with MAC supporting Pugh since he broke into London Fashion Week and other international catwalks.

MAC are keeping some information quiet but have suggested that the range will consist of a number of colour cosmetics and accessories which will all be packaged in designs by Gareth Pugh himself.

Personally I am hoping to see plentiful amounts of black, grey and white metallic tones in eyeshadows and nail polishes, something that truly reflects the ethos of Gareth Pugh. I must admit that I am just as excited about the packaging designed by Pugh as I am about the make-up range. I am expecting something sculptured, smoky and death-like created in latex or leather.

Gareth is one of few who effortlessly makes the gothic look glamorous, using the boldness of black and white tones to support his sculptured pieces of clothing which are more like a piece of art. His talent for design is extraordinary; dressing star’s such as Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Kylie Minogue.

The new launch will be celebrated in style with a glamorous cocktail party in New York next month.
